Colorful Chalkware Bulldog

Circa 1930s-40s

Chalkware bulldog in vibrant, modern-feeling tones. Chalkware, mostly molded figures cast in plaster or gypsum, gained popularity during the Great Depression as it could be cheaply mass-produced. Colorful animals like this bulldog were given out as carnival prizes before the now-familiar massive microplastic-laden stuffed animal took over their niche. I find carnival-prize-era chalkware pieces like this especially sweet knowing the role they might have played as a child’s prized possession in a time of global uncertainty.
